How Do I Get Started If I've Never Worn a Wig?

How Do I Get Started If I've Never Worn a Wig?

If you're considering wearing a wig for the first time, you're probably feeling a mix of emotions — curiosity, fear, hope, maybe even a little embarrassment. I understand that feeling deeply because I’ve been there myself.

My own journey into wigs didn’t start with excitement. It started with desperation.

I was losing more and more hair along my hairline — from ear to ear. My hairline was literally moving backwards. I remember looking in the mirror and thinking I looked like a little old man. I felt embarrassed and ashamed, even though hair loss wasn't my fault.

At the time, I didn’t know what to do to get my confidence back.

Wearing a wig felt scary. I worried it would look fake. I worried people would notice. I worried about what others would think.

But eventually I realized I needed to try something.

If you’re standing at that same starting point, here are a few things I wish someone had explained to me when I first began.

My First Wig Mistake (That Many Beginners Make)

When I bought my first wig, I made a mistake that I now see many beginners make.

I didn’t choose something that looked like me.

Instead of picking a style similar to my biological hair, I chose a shorter style in a lighter color. I spent about $300 on it — which isn’t terrible for a wig — but when I looked in the mirror, it just didn’t feel like me.

That made the transition harder.

At the time, I didn’t know anything about wigs. I simply went with what the retailer suggested. Looking back, I wish someone had guided me toward something closer to my natural hair so the adjustment would have been easier.

I also rushed the decision because I was fed up and just wanted something to fix the problem.

Now, after years of experience, I know there is a better way to start.

My 3 Tips for Choosing Your First Wig

When I help beginners today, I always recommend starting with these three things.

1. Start with a Synthetic Wig

Many people assume human hair wigs are better, but for beginners I actually recommend starting with synthetic.

Synthetic wigs are easier to maintain and they hold their style beautifully. You don’t have to worry about humidity, rain, or restyling it every day. You simply wear it and go.

For someone new to wigs, that simplicity makes the learning curve much easier.

2. Choose a Style Similar to Your Biological Hair

One of the easiest ways to transition into wigs is by choosing something that already looks like you.

Stick close to:

  • Your current length
  • Your general style
  • Your usual color

When you do this, the wig doesn’t feel like such a dramatic change — and you’ll feel more comfortable seeing yourself in the mirror.

3. Look for a Lace Front (and a Monofilament Part if Possible)

If you want a wig that looks natural, cap construction matters.

At minimum, I suggest looking for a lace front wig. Lace fronts create a natural-looking hairline because the lace melts into the skin.

If your budget allows, a monofilament part is also wonderful. This feature makes it look like the hair is actually growing out of your scalp.

Those two features together can make a huge difference in realism.

The Emotional Adjustment No One Talks About

Even when you choose the right wig, seeing yourself in it for the first time can feel strange.

You’re simply not used to seeing yourself that way yet.

One of the best ways to adjust is to ease into it gradually.

Start by wearing your wig around the house. Get used to how it feels. Move around in it. Look at yourself from different angles.

Then try wearing it while running errands. Going to the grocery store or picking up coffee can help you build confidence.

What many people discover is something surprising:

Most people aren’t paying attention to your hair at all.

They’re busy thinking about themselves and their own lives.

You Control Your Wig Story

Another question many people struggle with is whether they should tell others they’re wearing a wig.

My advice is simple: do whatever makes you comfortable.

You are not obligated to share your hair loss journey with anyone.

Some people choose to talk openly about it. Others prefer to keep it private. Both choices are completely valid.

This journey belongs to you.

The Truth About Wigs

Find what works and you'll get your confidence back.

If you’re feeling scared about wearing your first wig, here’s the truth I wish someone had told me earlier.

Wigs can give you your confidence back.

And it does get easier.

There is a learning curve. There’s a lot to discover about styles, colors, cap types, and care. But if you give yourself time and patience, you’ll grow more comfortable with each step.

And if you do decide to share your journey with others, you may find something else surprising.

Most people are incredibly supportive and understanding.

Give Yourself Grace

If you’re just starting your wig journey, give yourself space to learn.

You don’t have to figure everything out overnight.

Take it one step at a time, be patient with yourself, and remember that confidence doesn’t come from perfect hair — it comes from feeling like yourself again.

And that is absolutely possible.
